Portsmouth's returns policy has been mixed

The elder statesmen among my readers (ie, the ones with grey or no hair) responded this week after I asked: Who have we missed in our run through of players who’ve come back for second Pompy spells?

We’d covered the likes of Crouch, Walsh, Whittingham, Benjani and Bradbury but if you go back further you’ll find others.

Kelvin Pryce, Bryan Davis, John Tucker, Chris Alexander and Mike Davies all pointed out Chris Kamara had two Blues spells, with Bryan saying: ‘He was sold far too quickly in his second spell.’

Pat Neil was another returnee, about whom Graham Dubber recalled: ‘Made his First Division debut for Pompey in 1955 while still at school. Played nine matches and did okay, but was shamefully hounded by a Fratton crowd brought up on the brilliance of Peter Harris. Left for Wolves and Cambridge Uni. Returned to FP in '62 and made two appearances.’

Graham named another from those days: ‘Johnny Gordon - not too many fans expressed disappointment when he left Pompey to join Birmingham in 1958, but most were glad to see him return two and a half years later, such had been the demise of the Blues under Freddie Cox.’

Andi Saunders also mentioned JG, saying he was his coach at Chi City at one time.

Friend of the column Johnny Moore highlighted Bobby Kellard: ‘Went to Bristol City 1968. Came back a few stone heavier with a bushy beard from Palace 1972. Loaned to Hereford 1975 then went to South Africa.’

Another suggestion from John Tucker: ‘Brian Lewis (1963 to 67, sold to Coventry, bought him back from Colchester in 72). Never saw his first spell and as a boy I think I was underwhelmed by his return.’

More next week – keep the suggestions coming!
