Do you remember when Wrens were Wrens and the dress of the day was black shoes, a blue skirt, white blouse and cap?

They also carried a bag with a long strap for carrying personal effects.

I received a letter from former Wren Mary Bedford of St Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia, who was based at Stockheath Naval Camp during the war.

She tells me she bought a bag from a leather shop at Havant and when she arrived back at the camp everyone wanted one. It appears the fashion caught on and the shoulder bags became standard issue.
