Family's Spinnaker abseil raises cash

The trio – Jeannette, Chris and Andrew Hayward – descended the tower for Cancer Research and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mum Jeannette raised an impressive £1,500 for Cancer Research while brothers Chris and Andrew raised £800 for Macmillan. Dressed as Spiderman, the Sugar Plum Fairy and a ‘surfer dude’ the brave threesome made their way down the tower in Gunwharf Quays.

Jeannette, 59, said: ‘It feels absolutely brilliant doing something like this for charity and raising so much money.’

The height of the Spinnaker didn’t faze Jeannette who said she enjoyed it.

She said: ‘I was a little nervous at first because it was so high up and it was quite windy up there but I’m glad I’ve done it now. I’m still buzzing from it.’

Jeannette suffers from bowel cancer and has been battling the disease since 2007 but hopes the money raised will go towards finding a cure.

‘It’s a horrible disease and hopefully the money raised from doing the abseil will help out in the future.’

Brothers Chris, 37 and Andrew, 34, chose Macmillan because of the help and support it has provided.

‘Surfer dude’ Andrew said: ‘It’s great to raise so much money for charity, it’s all going to such a good cause. Both charities do so much and the money raised will go a long way I’m sure.’

The abseil was planned for March but had to be postponed because of Storm Kate.
