A MOTORCYCLIST who stayed up drinking watching the Tyson Fury boxing match until 6am crashed his motorbike after riding eight hours later and having a ‘couple of beers’.

Frank Jonas, 50, was nearly triple the drink-drive limit but in court blamed hitting a patch of grease at the Portsbridge Roundabout for crashing his Triumph Bonneville bike on his way home to Southwood Road, Hilsea.

Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court heard he went spinning out of control and hit a kerb as the bike handles twisted and hit him in the chest before he collided with a grass mound.

Passing police stopped to help as members of the public went to Jonas’ aid on February 23 - but officers attending said he did ‘smell of alcohol’.

Giles Fletcher, prosecuting, said a breath test found he had 101 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 35.

Robert Locke, mitigating, said the ‘problem in this case’ was Jonas started drinking on Saturday before watching the Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder boxing match livestream from Las Vegas up to 6am on Sunday, February 23.

‘He then went to bed, didn’t get up until 2pm and felt fine and thought he’d go for a spin on his bike,’ Mr Locke said.

The specialist transport lawyer said Jonas then ‘had a couple of beers with friends, which was probably not a good idea’.

District judge Gary Lucie imposed a 26-month driving ban with 60 hours’ unpaid work.

Despite previously being fined for driving after drinking in 2012 in the Netherlands, Jonas can take a course to reduce his ban.

He must also complete a separate probation drink-impaired drivers’ course. The judge said it was ‘clearly serious enough’ for a 12-month community order and imposed one.

Jonas was asked if he would prefer a substantial fine or unpaid work – he told the court he would prefer the unpaid work.

Jonas is the son of former Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Frank Jonas, currently a Portsmouth City Council ward member for Hilsea.
