A 31-year-old man has been charged after hundreds of pounds worth of goods were stolen from a supermarket in Portsmouth.Â

George Sorin Salcianu, of Ilford, Essex, has been charged with theft from a shop and assault by beating following the incident at Sainsbury's in Farlington.

He is due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on November 1.

Portsmouth Police tweeted: '˜A man has been charged following theft of goods worth almost £600 from Sainsbury's in Farlington.

'˜George Sorin Salcianu (31) of Ilford, Essex has been charged with theft from a shop and assault by beating.

'˜He's due to appear at Ports Magistrates Court 1/11 9.30am.'
